Giggs: Remember what we did achieve

Ryan Giggs has told his devastated Manchester United team-mates not to forget it has been a season to remember.

Instead of a victory parade around Manchester, United flew home to the inevitable inquest about what went wrong in Rome last night after their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Barcelona.

To a man, the Red Devils have held up their hands to admit Barca were the better side at the Stadio Olimpico, with a clear edge in all areas.

It is not the way Giggs intended to begin his summer holidays and presents a marked contrast to the jubilation they experienced 12 months ago after beating Chelsea in a penalty shoot-out.

But, while the veteran Welshman is as crushed as anyone by the chronic failure to perform, he insists there are moments to cherish from the campaign as well.

''Great teams bounce back after big disappointments,'' he said. ''It has been a fantastic season and we must not forget that. We have achieved so much.

''All we have done is fall just short at the final hurdle in the Champions League. We are still a great team and we have great players in that dressing room. Next year we will come back stronger and look forward to the challenge.''

And the challenge is not an insignificant one.

Whereas this season history beckoned in Europe with the ultimately doomed attempt to become the first team to retain the Champions League since its inception in 1992, next year it will be at home.

Having drawn level with Liverpool on 18 league titles this term, Giggs knows one more - which would be his 12th personally - would not only allow the Old Trafford outfit to overtake their north-west rivals, it would also see them become the first side in English football to win the championship four years in a row.

''To win three Premier League titles on the trot is an unbelievable thing to do,'' said Giggs. ''Now we must look to make it four.''

Ronaldo: United tactics '' not good''

Cristiano Ronaldo has said ''everything went wrong'' in Manchester United's 2-0 defeat by Barcelona in the final of the UEFA Champions League and said their tactics were ''not good''.

United set out at the Stadio Olimpico with the same formation which overcame Arsenal in the semi-finals, with Ryan Giggs replacing the suspended Darren Fletcher. However, after a positive start, the Premier League champions failed to recover from conceding a 10th minute Samuel Eto'o goal and were outplayed for the remainder of the game.

Sir Alex Ferguson altered his tactics at half-time by bringing on Carlos Tevez for Anderson, but the change failed to improve United's performance.

Ronaldo started the match up front before moving out to the wing and the Portuguese ace felt 'everything went wrong'.

"I cannot explain," he told RTP. "We, the players, were not well, the tactics were not good... everything went wrong.

"We have to give credit to Barcelona, but they were a bit lucky to be here because Chelsea did not deserve to lose and no-one has mentioned that.

"I have to congratulate Barcelona, they were better, but football is just like this: only the winners get talked about."

The former Sporting Lisbon man also refused to comment on his future amid fresh reports linking Real Madrid with a renewed interest in his services.

He added: "My future now is the national squad, so that we can win, so that we can be in a good position in our qualifying group.

"About clubs, I do not want to talk about that, I want to rest, go on holiday, I am very tired, I have played a lot of games, a lot of pressure. The future, we will see."

Rooney masks pain to hail Iniesta as world's best

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney did not let the disappointment of Wednesday's 2-0 defeat in the Champions League final stop him hailing Barcelona's Andres Iniesta as the world's best player.

Iniesta was instrumental as the Catalans controlled midfield to claim their third European Cup with relative ease. He laid on Samuel Eto'o's 10th-minute opener before Lionel Messi sealed victory with a rare header in the second half.

"They are a brilliant team and I think Iniesta is the best player in the world at the moment," the forward, among the English champions' biggest disappointments on the night, told reporters.

United made a bright start with FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo having a number of chances, but it was a one-sided affair after Eto'o struck and Rooney admitted his team were comprehensively beaten.

"They scored their goals at good times and made it difficult for us" he said. "Barcelona pass the ball so well and if you don't take your chances they punish you."

Defending champions United, in contrast, were uncharacteristically careless with possession and Rooney was one of the worst offenders. He made no secret of how bitter the defeat tasted.

"I'm hurting at the moment, but we've got to get over it and look to next season," he said.

Meanwhile, Edwin van der Sar cited an inability to retain possession as the major reason for the defeat and challenged his side to fight back.

''It was a disappointing evening,'' said the veteran Dutchman. ''We had a good 10 minutes at the start but after that it changed a little bit. We have come from behind plenty of times before, so the goal itself was not an issue.

''But what it did was to allow them to start playing a little bit. In situations like that you have to try and keep possession but at times I felt we lost it a little bit too easily.''

At 38, Van der Sar might not get many more chances to make amends and add to the winner's medal he won last season, 13 years after his first triumph with Ajax.

However, he is committed to another year with the Old Trafford outfit, when the desire is bound to be strong given the decisive nature of Barcelona's victory. Not that Van der Sar is looking ahead too quickly. He wants a rest first.

''We have got to get this disappointment out of the way,'' he said. ''I will look at new challenges after the holidays.''

Messi and Eto'o left overwhelmed by victory

Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi were left overwhelmed after scoring the goals in Barcelona's Champions League final triumph over Manchester United in Rome.

The 2-0 victory completed a remarkable campaign for Barca, who also won the Primera Liga crown and the Copa del Rey under first-year coach and former club star Josep Guardiola.

Eto'o's early strike put the Spanish team in front for good while Messi headed in the other in the second half, leaving him as the Champions League's top scorer with nine goals.

''I think it will take us a long time to realise what we have achieved today,'' Messi said. ''To score in a Champions League final against Manchester United and win the league title is just unbelievable. It's a dream. This has been an unbelievable season.''

Manchester United were the holders and they had gone into the match at the Stadio Olimpico on the back of a 25-match unbeaten run in the competition, but after enjoying a strong start Eto'o scored and stole the momentum for Barcelona.

''What we have done is historic, this is fantastic,'' Eto'o said. ''I'm not sure that my goal was crucial for us to win the Champions League but it was certainly important.

''The whole team played fantastic, from Xavi to Iniesta, who was coming back from injury. It's been a great team effort from the start of the season.''

Messi finished second in the FIFA World Player of the Year voting to United's Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was nowhere near as influential as Messi last night, however.

There was a lot of media hype about the Ronaldo vs Messi showdown in Rome but Ronaldo said: ''There was no duel. Barcelona were better on the night.''

He said that Eto'o's strike had been the most important.

''The first goal really hurt us,'' he said. ''We didn't react. We weren't able to play our game and Barcelona dominated.''

There has been constant speculation about Ronaldo's future with Real Madrid having not hidden their desire to sign the player one day.

Ronaldo wouldn't be drawn on his future, however, when asked about Real Madrid and if this was his last match for Manchester United. ''I don't want to talk about my future right now,'' he said.

Ferdinand: United will bounce back from defeat

Rio Ferdinand insists his Manchester United team-mates are big enough to handle the shattering disappointment of Wednesday's Champions League final defeat in Rome.

Ferdinand was desperate to enter the record books as a back-to-back European Cup winner but those dreams were quashed at the Stadio Olimpico as Barcelona registered a richly-deserved triumph.

So, instead of a bus parade around the city, United flew back to Manchester with an acute sense of deflation, although Ferdinand thinks United are strong enough to bounce back.

''If we had won it would have been an unbelievable end to the season but we knew if we lost we would be finishing on a low no matter what we had achieved before,'' he said. ''We were not silly enough to think the garden will always be rosy

''We are grown men. We can handle it. We just have to brush ourselves down and come back stronger.''

Ferdinand is happy to postpone the debrief that must follow as Sir Alex Ferguson works out why United were so badly outplayed.

Poor tactics are being blamed in some quarters, although the argument is difficult to fathom given United set up in exactly the same way as when they defeated FC Porto and Arsenal earlier in the competition.

Ferdinand has no in-depth answers to add. However, his gut feeling was that too many players made too many errors at the wrong time against talented opponents well capable of taking advantage.

''To play a team like Barcelona you need your A game. We didn't have it,'' he said. ''We did well in those first 10 minutes. If we had scored then it might have been a different game.

''But we gave away two soft goals at crucial points in the game and didn't put away the chances we had. In a Champions League final, if you do not play well, either as individuals or a collective unit, you do not deserve to win.''

Ferdinand accepted it was scant consolation for the 30,000 United fans who bellowed their backing to their team and magnanimously applauded Barcelona at the end, but is confident when the new campaign begins again in August, the Red Devils will be fully motivated and ready for battle.

''The belief is still there,'' he said. ''We have come a long way in these last few years. You do not lose all that by getting beaten in one match.

''We need strength of character now but we have it in abundance.''
